Vikings battle but fall in doubleheader at UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Elizabeth City State University softball team started their 2019 campaign with a doubleheader at UNC Pembroke on Sunday and dropped 10-0 and 11-3 decisions to the Braves.

UNC Pembroke (5-4) started game one off on a strong note, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first before the Vikings were able to get out of the inning off of an unassisted play at third base. The Vikings would turn things around and only give up two more runs throughout the next four innings. Offensively, the Vikings were not able to get a runner on base throughout the five innings of play.

ECSU (0-2) would score their first run of the 2019 season in the top of the first inning of game two as Alexis Blackwell singled to right field and scored Stephanie Komives from second base. UNC Pembroke would plate three in the bottom half of the inning off of a Cam Davis double to right and a Jordan Adcox home run to right field. The Braves continued their scoring throughout the next four innings as they would plate two in the second, four runs in the third and one in both the fourth and fifth innings.

The Vikings would chip away in the third with two runs off of a Kali Flanagan single to center field that brought around Alexis Blackwell to score. Shea Vaccaro would send a sacrifice fly to right field to score Camryn West from third.

The Vikings will come back to the Harbor of Hospitality to face off against Bryant and Stratton College in a doubleheader on Saturday. Those contests will start at noon and 2 p.m.
