Jalyn Brown erupted for 30 points as Elizabeth City State cruised past Shaw, 86-58, for a CIAA victory in the Robert L. Vaughan Center.
The Vikings shot a sizzling 56.5% (13-23) from 3-point range behind Brown's incredible eight for 11 night from behind the arc. A 3-point jumper by junior forward
Naterria Luster, who finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, gave ECSU its biggest lead of the night at 68-36 with 32 seconds remaining in the third period.
Brown scorched the nets for 19 points during the opening half and helped fuel a pair of runs which staked the Vikings (6-4, CIAA 1-1) to a 48-28 lead at the break. She sank five of seven 3-point jumpers to help ECSU shoot 58.3 per cent (7-12) from long range. Freshman guard
Asia Deal, who finished with 16 points, added 11 points and Luster nine before the break.
Brown began and ended an 11-0 run with field goals as the Vikings rolled to an 18-11 edge. Deal began a 13-0 surge by knocking down a trey for the final points of the opening quarter before Luster sandwiched inside field goals around a pair of 3-point jumpers by Brown as ECSU widened its lead to 34-16 with 6:42 left before the half.
Junior guard
DeNayia Holmes dished out a career-high 14 assists for her second consecutive double-digit assist effort as the Vikings piled up a season-high 25 assists. Holmes handed out 10 assists in ECSU's 99-51 road win over Regent University on Saturday.
Junior forward
Devona Stell came up an eyelash short of her third double-double of the season, totaling nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds to help ECSU dominate the glass, 40-29.
It was the third 30-point performance of Brown's storied career. She netted a career-high 32 points in an 80-71 overtime loss to Claflin in January of last season.
Senior forward KlinTisha Martin paced the Bears (2-5, CIAA 0-2) with 20 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Victoria Swanson and freshman forward Amani Moxley chipped in eight points apiece.
The Vikings host St. Augustine's Saturday at 2 p.m. and Fayetteville State Monday at 5:30 p.m. in a pair of CIAA contests before taking a fall semester final examination break. The ECSU men will play following each of those women's games.
