RALEIGH, NC- The Elizabeth City State University volleyball team opened the season with three tough losses at the Lady Falcon Challenge hosted by Saint Augustine's University.
In Friday's action the Lady Vikings suffered three set setbacks to both Glenville State and West Virginia State. In the tournament's opener Kaitlyn Larner led all performers with a match high 11 kills as Glenville State upended ECSU 25-11, 25-12, 25-14. GSU had a strong service game with 13 aces in the match, 5 of which came from Cassidy Clark.
Emmesha White led ECSU with 8 kills and Nikhaule Singleton totaled two service aces in the loss.
The West Virginia State Yellow Jackets rolled to a straight set win over the Lady Vikings 25-18, 25-5, 25-7. West Virginia State used a balanced offensive attack with 31 total kills against just 15 for ECSU. Rebekah Baldwin paced the Yellow Jackets with 9 kills while Mallory Rennard chipped in with 16 assists and 6 service aces.
WVSU used a team effort to amass 12 assisted blocks in the match. Emmesha White was again the high woman for the Lady Vikings with a team best 7 kills.
On Saturday morning, North Greenville improved to 2-0 on the young season in a three set win 25-9, 25-5 and 25-12.
ECSU will return to action at the CIAA Roundup September 19-20 in Raleigh, NC.
