ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Chowan University maintained first place in the CIAA Northern Division with a three set sweep of Elizabeth City State University, 25-14, 25-7, 25-20 Thursday night at the RL Vaughan Center.
Suraya Chase led the way for the Hawks who improve to 5-3 overall and 4-0 on the season. Chase finished the match with 8 kills and 11 digs while teammate Morgan Spencer chipped in with 8 kills of her own.
After amassing an impressive nine kill to one error ratio in the opening set, Chowan took the first set of the match 25-14. Then they turned up their defense, holding ECSU to just 2 kills in the second set against seven errors for a 25-7 set two win and a 2-0 match advantage.
The Lady Vikings mustered a mini rally by jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the third and final set. Chowan, behind the service game of Brianna Smith, went on an 8-2 run to give the Hawks a 12-9 lead. The Lady Vikings kept it close until the Hawks pushed for a six point lead (17-11) and ultimately held on for a 25-20 set (match) victory.
Emmesha White was the high Lady Viking with 8 kills.
ECSU will return to action on Sunday at 3pm at the RL Vaughan Center when they take on The Lincoln University.
