MURFREESBORO, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings captured their first victory of the season at the North-South roundup hosted by Chowan University.
The Lady Vikings went 1-1 on the first day , suffering a 3-0 loss to Fayetteville State before rebounding to defeat Shaw University for their first victory of the year.
On Saturday, the Lady Broncos won with set scores of 25-16, 27-25, and 25-16 over the Lady Vikings. Fayetteville State edged the Lady Vikings with 30 to 25 in the kills category. Samira Luis paced FSU with 10 kills while Rosetta Becerra posted 10 kills for Elizabeth City State.
In their final match of day one the Lady Vikings outlasted the Shaw Lady Bears 3-2. Shaw University came out firing on all cylinders and outlasted the Lady Vikings 25-21 in the first set. Down but not out, ECSU fought back with a vengeance in the second set and used a 6-0 run off of Krystal Sawyer's serves to take an early advantage.
The Vikings maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, clinching the 25-15 win to knot the match 1-1. With the score knotted 9-9 in set three, a kill by Rosetta Beccera gave the Lady Vikings the lead which they never relinquished. They closed out the third set with a 25-20 victory.
The Shaw Lady Bears refused to go away quietly and fought to take an early lead in the fourth set before topping the Lady Vikings 25-21. Shaw took advantage of Lady Viking errors and jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the fifth set. Then with the score tied 4-4, a kill by Deja Simpson for Shaw put the Lady Bears ahead. From there, both teams battled, matching each other point for point until a kill by Kelsey Smith and an attack error by the Lady Bears clinched the 23-21 set and the first win of the year for the Lady Vikings
Ladazia Burris led all players in the contest with 20 kills followed by Deja Simpson with 17 kills. Kelsey Smith, Rosetta Becerra and Emmesha White all had double digit kills in the win for ECSU.
