BECERRA REPEATS AS CIAA VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Nov. 13, 2014

HAMPTON, VA- ECSU's Rosetta Becerra headlines this year's all-conference team as the 2014 CIAA Player of the Year as released by the CIAA Office Thursday.

Becerra made history last year as the first Lady Viking to be named the Player of the Year and becomes the first to win the honor in back-to-back seasons since Chekimbrell Jefferson (Fayetteville State) won it three straight years (2007-2009).

This season Becerra, a senior outside hitter who hails from Riverside, CA, led the team in kills with 320 and kills per set with an average of 3.56. In the CIAA she ranked second in kills per set and third overall in kills. Individually she posted 11 double-doubles this season (kills-digs) and set new career high twice with 29 kills against Lincoln and Saint Augustine's.

Joining Becerra as a first team All-CIAA honoree is senior Kelsey Smith. The Cascade, Virginia native made the first team this season after a career year that saw her post personal bests as a middle blocker/hitter for ECSU. She is tied at first in the CIAA for blocks per set and leads the conference in total blocks with 97. She smashed a career high 26 kills in the October 19th clash with Virginia State and had a personal best 5 solo versus Lincoln on October 12th.

Rounding out the honorees for ECSU is senior Tracie Twine, who lands on the All-CIAA Second Team as a libero. Twine led the Lady Vikings in digs in 2014 with 290 with ranked 7th over in the conference.

ECSU will begin single elimination play on Friday at the 2014 CIAA Volleyball Tournament in Fayetteville, NC. The Lady Vikings will face Winston-Salem State University at 4pm at the Capel Arena on the campus of Fayetteville State University.
