ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University Hawks took hold of first place in the CIAA Northern Division with a three set sweep of Elizabeth City State University in Thursday night volleyball action at the RL Vaughan Center.
The two teams entered the evening's contest in a four way tie in the CIAA North sporting a 3-1 Division record along with Virginia State and Virginia Union.
The Hawk momentarily move into first place with their win over ECSU, improving to 13-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play. Melanie Chaussee led all players with a match high 11 kills while Brittany Tschida chipped in with 19 kills and 8 digs.
Chowan won with set scores of 25-7, 25-22, 25-21 and doubled their 18 errors with 36 kills in the match. They also kept the Lady Vikings off balance with a strong service game racking up 10 aces on the night.
Rosetta Becerra paced ECSU with a tame high 10 kills while Kelsey Smith continued her solid all-around play with 7 kills, 6 digs and a match high 4 solo blocks.
ECSU (5-13, CIAA 5-6) will return to action on Sunday when they host The Lincoln University in a Northern Division clash. Game time is scheduled for 2pm at the RL Vaughan Center.
