Oct. 2, 2014

Final Stats

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University volleyball team picked up an important Northern Division win, with a four set victory over Virginia Union University Thursday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

After dropping the first set 25-18, the Lady Vikings took the next three (16,23,23) and the match to move up to third place in the division. ECSU improves to 3-1 in the CIAA North, 5-5 in conference play and 5-10 overall.

The Lady Viking tandem of Rosetta Becerra and Kelsey Smith proved to be too much for the Lady Panthers over the final three sets. Both posted double-doubles with Becerra tallying a match high 20 kills (13 digs) while Smith added 15 kills, a team best 19 digs and chipped in with three solo blocks.

In the fourth set, the Lady Panthers led by seven on one occasion (16-9) and appeared poised to force a fifth and final set. Virginia Union held a 20-15 advantage before a side out gave the ball back to ECSU. Behind the service game of Emmesha White, Becerra picked up her 19th kill of the night before an attack error by Brittany Dobbins forced VUU call in timeout in hopes of stalling ECSU's momentum.

However White's strong service game went on to reel off four more points, including two aces to give ECSU their first lead of the set 22-20.

VUU fought back to tie the game at 22 apiece before the two teams exchanged a side out for a 23 all tie. Kelsey Smith got her final kill of the night for match point and the Lady Vikings sealed the win on an attack error by Kristin Madison.

Both Virginia Union and ECSU finished with a team total of 42 kills. The Lady Vikings faired slight better with 21 attack errors to 30 for the Lady Panthers.

ECSU will return to action in a tri-match this Sunday hosted by UNC-Pembroke. They will face Flagler College at 3:30pm followed by the Lady Braves at 5:00pm.
