ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Dierdre Carter tallied a team high 23 kills as the Virginia State University Lady Trojans outlasted Elizabeth City State University in five sets, spoiling the Lady Vikings' senior day at the RL Vaughan Center.
Carter also added a game best 4 aces to lead a strong VSU service game. The Lady Trojans finished the match 12 service aces to just 4 for ECSU. The teams split the first two sets with Virginia State taking the opener 25-20 before ECSU bounced back to take set two 25-19.
In set three, a kill by Brianna Small sandwiched by two of Carter's service aces opened up a 10-3 lead in favor of Virginia State. ECSU went on a 12-9 run to close the gap to three (19-16) but would only manage two more points down the stretch and the Lady Trojans took the set 25-18.
ECSU came from behind in set four to force a fifth and final set. The Lady Vikings trailed 20-16 until a kill (side out) by Kelsey Smith sparked 9-2 ECSU run for a 25-22 win.
The Lady Trojans had an 8 to 2 kill-error ratio to take set five and the match 15-10.
Kelsey Smith and Rosetta Becerra led the way for the Lady Vikings with 26 and 21 kills, respectively while Krystal Sawyer added 44 assists.
ECSU (7-15, CIAA 7-7) will return to action on November 3rd at Virginia Union University.
