PETERSBURG, VA- The Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls, in their first CIAA Tournament since 2008, upset the number three seed out the Northern Division, Elizabeth City State in a 3-2 victory on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Vikings were eliminated from the CIAA Tournament, while Johnson C. Smith advanced to take on the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University and were ousted in straight sets.
The Lady Vikings were led by Rosetta Becerra who led all players in the match with 20 kills in the loss. Krystal Sawyer had 45 assists for the Lady Vikings. Imeshia Jones led the way for Johnson C. Smith with 17 kills while Kayla Bozemore notched 40 assists.
Elizabeth City State's Grace Barrett led all players in the match with 17 digs.
The Lady Vikings jumped out to a quick 25-18 win in the first set, only to fall to the Lady Golden Bulls 26-24 in set two. Johnson C. Smith held on to the momentum in the third set to secure the 25-22 victory and gain a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Elizabeth City State refused to go down without a fight and clinched the fourth set 25-23 to force a deciding fifth set. The Lady Vikings were unable to keep the momentum going in their favor and suffered the 15-7 loss in set five.
