MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Mount Olive College Trojans defeated Elizabeth City State 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 in non-conference women's volleyball Tuesday at Kornegay Arena.

An ace by Charnel Austin helped Mount Olive (6-8) score the first five points of the opening set as the Trojans jumped out to an 8-2 lead. ECSU got as close as 19-17 after a pair of blocks by Alicia Reynolds. A kill by Montgomery Register and an ace by Alysha Tyms-Burnett helped the Trojans stretch the lead to five and Carly White put home a kill in the middle on set point.

Mount Olive had to rally from four points down in the second set after Rosetta Becerra recorded all three of her service aces during a 6-0 Elizabeth City State run to give the Lady Vikings a 13-9 lead. The Trojans were still down by four until a pair of aces by Austin and a kill by Nicole Sparks from her libero position highlighted a 7-0 run to put Mount Olive on top 19-16. Sparks served back-to-back aces on the final two points to give the Trojans a two-set lead.

Elizabeth City State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set and still held a 10-6 advantage before a Mount Olive run put the Trojans ahead to stay. Register had an ace and a kill, while Danielle Plante added an ace and back-to-back kills to give the Trojans a 20-14 lead. Plante, who did not play until the third set, recorded kills on the final two points of the match to seal the win.

Becerra led the Elizabeth City State with nine kills, while Reynolds and Kelsey Smith shared match-high honors with four blocks apiece. The Vikings finished with 11 aces as a team.
