BARTON COLLEGE SQUEEZES BY ECSU IN THREE SETS

ELIZABETH CITY, NC-Kyla Shute and Lia Scott both tallied double figures in kills but it was not enough as the Elizabeth City State University volleyball team fell in three straight sets to Barton College 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 Tuesday evening at the RL Vaughan Center.

Lia Scott topped the Lady Vikings will a team high 13 kills and Oasis Ellison led all defenders with a game high 19 digs.

Kyla Shute had the best outing of her short career at ECSU. The freshman, who hails from Corona, CA, registered a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs, both season highs. She also added 2 service aces, 4 assists and zero hitting errors in the three set loss to Barton, who improves to 4-2 on the year.

All three sets were close and over the first two, neither team led by more than four points. In the final set the Lady Bulldogs, behind the service game of Amanda Grandy reeled off six consecutive points for a 15-7 lead. ECSU rallied back with an 11-3 run to tie the game at 18 apiece before a service error gave the ball and a one point lead back to Barton.

Barton would take the set and the match winning six of the last seven points. Kati Wood lead all scorers with a match high 15 kills.

The Lady Vikings (2-7) will open up conference play at the CIAA North/South roundup this weekend in Hampton, VA. On Friday they will begin with Shaw University (3pm) and Winston-Salem State at (6pm). On Saturday they will face Johnson C. Smith (1pm) and Fayetteville State (5pm) and will wrap up the weekend on Sunday against Saint Augustine's (10am) and Livingstone (12noon). All games will take place at the Boo Williams Sportsplex (5 Armistead Pointe Parkway, Hampton, VA).
