Final Stats
RALEIGH, NC-Elizabeth City State All-CIAA cornerback Justin Hamilton blocked a 34-yard field goal attempt with 3.9 seconds remaining as the Vikings held on for a 29-27 win over Saint Augustine's College Saturday afternoon at Broughton High School.
With 1:22 remaining the Vikings took the final lead of the game on Cedric Blacknall's second 2-yard rushing touchdown of the afternoon. However unlike his first rushing touchdown (7:35 in the first quarter) the extra point by Daniel Mendez was called no good and ECSU clung to the 2-point lead. The Falcons then orchestrated an 11 play 51 yard drive down to the Vikings 17 yard line, leaving kicker Adison Daniels a shot at the game winner. Unblocked from the right side Hamilton corralled his second blocked field goal in as many weeks, capping an 8 tackle, 2 interception (returned for 15 yards) performance for the afternoon.
For the game both teams battled rainy elements, combining for 12 turnovers. Although the Falcons held the Vikings to a season low 172 yards of total offense on only 49 plays from scrimmage, Saint Augustine's committed 7 turnovers and surrendered two fourth quarter touchdowns. Creven Powell connected with Kevin Swain for a 59-yard touchdown strike to take a 23-19 lead with 6:26 remaining. The Falcons responded with a 6 play 83 yard drive capped by a 34-yard touchdown reception by Jone' Harris followed with a two-point conversion to take a 27-23 lead with 3:02 left in the game.
The win is the first for the Vikings this season after trailing at halftime (10-7). The Vikings claimed their first lead of the second half scoring nine straight points via a team safety followed by an 8-yard touchdown run by Daronte McNeill to take a 16-10 lead. The Falcons (1-4, CIAA 1-1) held the edge over the Vikings in first downs (23-12), rushing yards (122-63) and passing yards (246-109). Additionally they had the ball for nearly 39 minutes to 21 minutes for ECSU.
Kobi Williams led the ECSU defense with a game high 11 tackles while Larry Jones turned in a 6 tackle, 3 sack performance.
The Vikings (4-1, CIAA 2-0) will take on Virginia State University next Saturday, October 3rd in Petersburg, VA. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
