ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings captured the 2007 CIAA Eastern Division crown with a three-game sweep over Virginia Union University (30-11, 30-15, 30-12) Thursday night at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
With the win ECSU finishes the regular season at 19-9 overall, 12-1 in the CIAA and a perfect 8-0 in the CIAA East. Against CIAA opponents this year ECSU only dropped one match to cross division rival Fayetteville State University. Against all other conference foes, they swept all matches 3 games to none.
The Lady Vikings will enter next week's CIAA Volleyball Tournament as the top seed in the Eastern Division. The double elimination tournament will begin pool play on Thursday, November 8th in Charlotte, NC at 9:00am both on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University and the Grady Cole Complex. The semi-final and championship games will take place at Grady Cole on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Against the winless Lady Panthers (0-17, CIAA 0-13) the Lady Vikings wasted little time, totaling more than 4 times VUU's kill output (44-10). In each game the Lady Panthers collected a negative hitting percentage. In her final home game in a Lady Viking volleyball uniform Christina Hager finished with 7 kills , an assist, a service ace, a solo block and 2 assisted blocks. Stacie West and Xie'Ara Maybank-Smallings each finished with 8 kills apiece.
