Jonathan Nelson-Chavis serves as the Associate Athletic Director of Sports Medicine and Head Athletic Trainer at Elizabeth City State University, where he leads the sports medicine program supporting 10 varsity athletic teams. He is responsible for supervising a team of athletic trainers, managing department operations, and ensuring the highest standards of athlete care, injury prevention, and NCAA compliance.
Jonathan brings a robust background in both clinical and athletic environments, with previous experience at UNC Orthopedics and UNC Family Medicine. There, he played a key role in coordinating care across multiple locations, managing advanced orthopedic procedures, and leading concussion and rehabilitation protocols. His work also included oversight of disability cases, clinical administration, and outreach coordination.
Throughout his career, Jonathan has collaborated with a wide range of institutions and programs, including Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC State University, and several high schools throughout the Raleigh-Durham area. These partnerships have allowed him to engage with diverse athletic populations and contribute to comprehensive care at both the elite and community levels.
An alumnus of North Carolina Central University, Jonathan is a licensed athletic trainer in the state of North Carolina and holds national certification through the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers. He is also CPR/AED and First Aid certified, and a proud member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
