James DuBose Jr.

James M. DuBose, Jr. was appointed Director of Athletics at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) on July 15, 2022, after serving as interim athletic director since April 11, 2022. He oversees 11 men's and women's teams in the CIAA and has a strong track record of athletic and academic success. Under his leadership, ECSU has won two CIAA Championships, including the first Women's Basketball title in program history, and received two NCAA Statistical Champion awards. Over 100 student-athletes have graduated, and 47 student-athletes have been inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society. The department's grade point averaged has increased significantly, with ten programs achieving 3.0 or higher in the 2024-25.
DuBose has introduced the role of the Director of Student-Athlete Success & Wellness which was able to be developed due to receiving a NCAA Matching Grant, and various programs which support graduation and career development. Facility renovations, a dedicated academic center, and new revenue streams have been key parts of his vision. 

Prior to ECSU, he spent eight years at Winston-Salem State University, successfully increasing fundraising, forging partnerships, and expanding community engagement. DuBose is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA), Division II Athletic Directors Association, NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports, NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame Baord of Directors, and the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Tourism Development Authority Board of Directors. He has also served as a NCAA Division II Athletic Director Mentor for Women and Minorities. 

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from North Carolina A&T State University, and a master's in Sports Management along with a graduate certificate in Athletic Administration from Southern New Hampshire University, where he received the Distinguished Scholar Award. He is a father to two sons, Jamond and Jameson.
