Hyshem Staten is a native of Elizabeth City, NC. He transferred and continued his education in
Portsmouth, Va. While in Virginia, he found his passion and began his cross country career at
Churchland High School where he was a Coaches award recipient, 3x MVP, regional champion.
Upon Graduation, he accepted a scholarship to run cross country at Elizabeth City State
University where he later graduated with his degree in Graphic Design. While at Elizabeth City
State University, Hyshem Staten was named Captain all four years, named cross country MVP
all four years and became an all CIAA runner in 2017 with a 14th place finish at the CIAA
championship.
After Graduating from ECSU, he continued to stay close to his passion and began coaching on
the high school and collegiate level. He was the head coach of Pasquotank County High School
as well as the assistant coach for Elizabeth City State University in 2019. Currently he is the
head coach of the Mens and Women’s cross country program at ECSU. He has been the head
coach going into his 2nd full season. Also during this time frame, he has accepted a position at
Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he is a 2nd year electrician
