Rashawn Spencer

RaShawn M. Spencer, a Columbia, North Carolina native, returns to his Viking roots as the assistant golf coach at ECSU. Spencer’s professional journey reflects more than 20 years of dedication to student development, athletics, and community leadership. His experience includes serving as a head football coach, basketball coach, athletics director, and teacher across multiple North Carolina schools, earning distinctions such as Tideland Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and multiple Teacher of the Year awards. He brings a unique blend of athletic versatility, leadership, and educational excellence to the game of golf.

A proud alumnus of Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), Spencer first made his mark on campus as a dual-sport student-athlete, excelling in both football and golf from 1999 to 2003. He attended ECSU on an Incentive and Football Scholarship and distinguished himself academically as a member of the Honors Program, consistently earning placement on the ECSU All-Academic Team.

While widely recognized for his accomplishments on the football field—including All-CIAA honors, Defensive MVP accolades, and being the first student-athlete to serve on an ECSU Head Football Coach hiring committee—Spencer also demonstrated strong commitment and discipline on the golf course. From 2000 to 2002, he represented ECSU Golf with the same academic focus and competitive spirit that defined his collegiate career, laying the foundation for the coaching role he would later assume.

Beyond coaching, Spencer continues to serve ECSU as the public address announcer for both football and basketball, energizing the campus community with his voice and spirit. He is also certified in Right Response, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, and serves as a first responder within the school system—further underscoring his commitment to student well-being.

A devoted husband to Lorita Dance Spencer and proud father of two, Spencer balances his coaching responsibilities with his role as a veteran educator, currently teaching English and Health/Physical Education at H.L. Trigg Community School.
