Softball Earns First Win Of the Season Over Winston-Salem State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The ECSU Lady Vikings used a three-run fifth inning to earn their first win of the season, 6-4, over the Rams of Winston-Salem State Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Vikings struck early in the first inning when junior Isabel Mugaas hit a double to right field scoring sophomore Zeta Brown. WSSU added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame.

In the second inning, the tides were turned as ECSU's sophomore Joanna Duhudaway and junior Claire Kellum both crossed home plate. The Rams added a run in the bottom of the stanza to tie the game at 3-3.

After two innings of scoreless action, the Lady Vikings added three runs in top half of the fifth as Mugaas, Duhudaway and senior Casie Wright each added an RBI to give ECSU the 6-3 lead.

WSSU's Alleshia Pullen scored the final run of the game as she hit a solo homerun in the bottom half of seventh. After a double-play to end the game, the Lady Vikings secured their first win of the season.

Wright earned the victory in the circle holding the Rams at bay as she tallied a pair of strikeouts while surrendering nine hits.

"I couldn't be more satisfied with our performance today," stated Head Coach Erin Forbes. "We came out swinging and really made the adjustments we needed to from previous games. Executed well and just hands down a great ballgame on both sides!"

The second game of the double-header was canceled due to inclement weather.

The Lady Vikings improve to 1-8 on the season and are back to action when they take the field Tuesday, March 22, against the University of Mount Olive. Game times are 12PM and 2PM at the South Park Softball Complex in Elizabeth City.
